"A Year In Review" 2015-2016 Gonzaga Sports:
FALL
Water Polo- TheVarsity finished the season with a 16-11 record and finished in 3rd place at the Easterns. This season was the first time in the team’s history that they defeated Loyola Blakefield. The Varsity and JV both won the inaugural Viking Invitational-DC Metro Championship.
Cross Country-The Varsity finished in 2nd place at the WCAC Championships. The Varsity finished in 2nd place at the DC-MD Private Schools "State" Championship This was only the 4th time in the history of the meet that Gonzaga has finished as high as 2nd place. John Colucci led the way for Eagle runners with a 8th place finish. The varsity team came in 2nd place at the Jesuit Championships. John Colucci finished in 4th, Jacob Floam 8th and Will McCann 9th also finished in the top 10. At the Nike Regionals the Eagles finished in 20th place, their best finish since 2010.
The Varsity B team finished in 2nd place at the WCAC Championships. John Travis finished 2nd, while Will Spartin and Henry Hodges also earned top 10 finishes. The freshman earned a perfect score of 15 points to win their race, led by a photo-finish 1st and 2nd by David Giannini and Gavin Farley. At the Jesuit Championships David Giannini broke a school record on the 1.6 mile course
WCAC All-League:

Soccer- The Varsity finished their season with a record of 13-6-3. The Eagles finished as the #2 seed in the WCAC. They defeated Paul VI and Good Counsel to advance to their 15th WCAC Championship game in 16 years. The Eagles lost to DeMatha 2-1 in the Championship Game. In the DC State playoffs the Eagles defeated Bell 4-3 in overtime in the Quarterfinals and lost to St. Alban’s 2-1 in overtime in the Semifinals.

Football- The Varsity finished the season with a record of 11-2. After a 9-1 regular season highlighted by a 24-14 ESPN victory over DeMatha followed by a 32-13 win over Good Counsel the following week. This was the first time since 2002 Gonzaga defeated both DeMatha and Good Counsel in the regular season. The Eagles advanced to the WCAC playoffs as the #1 seed and lost to Good Counsel 35-12 in the semifinals. The team captured their second consecutive DC State Championship by defeating Friendship Collegiate 52-31 in the semifinals and HD Woodson 45-6 in the Championship game. They JV finished the year with a record of 4-4 and the freshman finished the season with a record of 5-5.

WINTER
Basketball- The Varsity current record is 24-10. The Eagles finished in 3rd place in the regular season and lost to DeMatha in the semifinals of the WCAC playoffs. The Eagles lost to undefeated HD Woodson in double overtime in the semifinals of the DC State Tournament. At the Alhambra Invitational Tournament the Eagles finished in 6th place. The JV Team finished with a record of 20-1 and the Freshman had a record of 16-1.

Hockey- Under 2nd year Head Coach Bill Slater, the Varsity had another outstanding year and finished with a record of 18-8-4 with only two of these losses coming from local teams. They lost to Landon in the MAPHL championship to end the year. They had two successful and challenging trips to Pittsburgh and Cleveland. The V2 Team finished with a record of 19-1-1 and captured their first MAPHL “A” Division Championship. JV Team finished with a record of 7-5-1.

Swim & Dive- Swimming and Diving completed their season with a 9-0 record in duals. Due to a late January snowstorm the National Catholic Championships were canceled this year. The Eagles went on to win their 6th consecutive WMPSSDL Championship and also won the Metro Championships.

Wrestling- The Varsity completed the season with a 3-5 record in duals. The Eagles finished in 3rd place at the WCAC Championships. Nathan Thacker and Will MacDonald finished in 1st place finish in their weight classes. Bailey Ogilvie finished in 3rd place. Jack Brown, Austin Davis, Aidan McDonough, Phil Firehock, and Gordon McMillien finished in 4th place.Will MacDonald was named Most Outstanding Wrestler. At the DC Championships the Eagles also finished in 3rd Place. Senior Will MacDonald, and Freshman Nathan Thacker finished in 1st place in their weight class and represented Gonzaga at the Nationals. At the Nationals MacDonald finished in 4th place and Thacker finished in 6th place.

SPRING
Lacrosse- The Varsity finished the season with a record of 19-2. They swept the IAC opponents and won their 7th consecutive WCAC Championship finishing #1 in the Washington Post for third time in five years. The Eagles defeated DeMatha 14-5 in the WCAC Final. The Eagles currently have a 75 game winning streak against WCAC opponents and have not lost to a WCAC opponent since 2009. The Junior Varsity had a record of 9-5 and the freshman finished the season with a record of 12-1.

Baseball- The Varsity finished the season with an overall record of 13-14. The Eagles lost in the quarterfinal of the WCAC Playoffs to O’Connell 1-0. In the DC State Tournament the Eagles lost to Maret in the semifinals 3-1. The JV Purple finished the season with a record of 13-8 and the JV White finished with a record of 10-7.

Tennis- The Varsity won their 6th WCAC Championship in 7 years. Senior Dominick Perez won the #1 singles and Tommy senior Tommy Clare won the #2 singles championship, Freshman Salvador Simpson and Jake Winters won the #3 and #4 singles respectively. JV finished with a record of 5-4.

Golf- The Varsity finished the season with a record of 13-1 and won the WCAC Championships for the 6th time in 7 years. All six golfers shot below 80 at the University of Maryland as they cruised to victory by 13 strokes over Good Counsel. Junior Teddy Zinsner finished as the low medalist, shooting 73. The Eagles finished in 3rd place at the Metros, 3 strokes behind Landon and 1 stroke behind Georgetown Prep.

Crew- In 2016 Gonzaga Crew added to its growing resume of championships. Locally, the team repeated as W.M.I.R.A. Champions for the 5th consecutive year. In Philadelphia, the Eagle's Varsity Eight won the Stotesbury Cup for the fifth straight year, becoming only the third program in the event's 89-year history to win the cup five years in a row, and the first since 1941. Additionally, the second eight and junior eight each earned silver at the Stotesbury Cup. At the USRowing Mid-Atlantic Regionals, the Varsity eight won its event and the Varsity four finished third, both qualifying for the Youth National Championships. At Youth Nationals in June, the Varsity Eight finished in 5th place in the A final, the highest placing scholastic crew in the event. The Varsity Four finished in 2nd place in the C final

Washington Post All-Met Best Boat: Gonzaga V1
Rugby-2016 was another magical year for Gonzaga Rugby. The Varsity Purple finished the season with a record of 26-1 and won their 3rd consecutive National Championship by defeating Jesuit High from Sacramento, CA, 7-6, in a rematch of the prior 3 years final. The Eagles also picked up their 9th consecutive MAVRC title as well as their 7th consecutive Jesuit Rugby Classic championship. Varsity Black finished with a record of 12-6, JV had a record of 17-10 and Freshman had a record of 9-4-1.
