At Gonzaga, sports fulfill a role of developing leadership, teamwork, and discipline. These are all important concepts in the Jesuit ideal of developing the whole person, as well as characteristics instilled in “Men For Others” an important value for all graduates of Gonzaga College High School.
Another important principle of a sound Jesuit education involves nurturing “human excellence.” Gonzaga Hockey, in its own way, endeavors to prepare young men for the many inevitable challenges and responsibilities they will face throughout their lives.
Gonzaga Hockey has evolved and matured since its inaugural season in 1992, when it was one of 12 teams in the Maryland Scholastic Hockey League (MSHL). For 15 seasons Gonzaga participated and excelled in both the Junior Varsity and Varsity divisions of the MSHL. In the 2004-05 season Gonzaga won the Private School Championship for the first time in school history. Gonzaga has gone on to successfully defend the Private School Championship in 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, making Gonzaga the first school in the history of the league to win the championship three consecutive years. This season the Gonzaga Varsity competes in the newly formed private school league named the Mid Atlantic Prep Hockey League (MAPHL). It consists of teams from the WCAC, IAC, and MIAA conferences and delivers the best high school hockey competition in the area.
Each Christmas, Gonzaga hosts the Gonzaga National Capital Hockey Tournament, known as the “Purple Puck”, at Fort Dupont Ice Arena, our home rink. As Father Bernard Dooley, S.J., former President of Gonzaga College High School noted, the Purple Puck was “…both the first Gonzaga-sponsored hockey tournament and the first tournament for high school teams in the Washington, DC area.” The tournament has enjoyed 16 seasons and continues to grow in popularity and talent level.
Gonzaga Hockey players have gone on to play various levels of hockey including the NCAA Division I, NCAA Division III, ACHA Division I, USA Hockey’s National Development Team, Junior “A” USHL, and Prep School programs. Clearly, our program has become one of the premier high school hockey programs in the Washington Metropolitan area
