Gonzaga Freshman Transition Workshops
Weekdays, June 26 - July 21, 2017
Holidays - July 3, July 4

Gonzaga offers courses to students who will be entering as freshmen in August 2017. These workshop classes have been developed to ease the transition from eighth grade to high school and include the following:

  • English
  • Advanced Math
  • Reading
  • Study Skills
  • Geometry
  • Algebra

Offering a "back to basics" approach, these classes are designed specifically for high school bound students, and they are taught by faculty selected for their patience, understanding, and humor.

Structured to prepare students in core subjects and essential skills, the Freshman Transition Program also provides an introduction to the high school classroom, the transportation routine and the Gonzaga campus and facilities. During the summer session, students must remain on campus during breaks and between classes. Refreshments may be purchased in the cafeteria.

Students should wear appropriate, casual attire and conduct themselves in an orderly manner at all times. Collard shirts, fingertip length shorts or cuffed pants, and socks are the norm. Gonzaga is a smoke-free campus.

The classes are offered at the following class times:

Period 1 - 8:30 AM to 10:00 AM
Period 2 - 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM
Period 3 - 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM

READING WORKSHOP

The Reading Workshop will provide the student with proven techniques for the improvement of comprehension and retention of reading material. Students will concentrate on analysis of assigned summer reading texts through structured discussion and short written responses.

STUDY SKILLS WORKSHOP

The Study Skills Workshop is based on current theories of learning and brain research. Topics covered include critical reading, listening, note-taking, and student-specific study techniques. Each student will determine his own learning style and develop an approach which builds on his strengths and remediates his weaknesses. The goal of this workshop is to help each student become an efficient and independent learner.

ENGLISH WORKSHOP

The English Workshop will engage students in the kinds of writing essential for subject writing in their high school courses. This course will include a review of basic composition with a strong emphasis on sentence structure, grammar, and punctuation. A thorough introduction to the Gonzaga Writing Project will also be included.

MATHEMATICS WORKSHOP

The Mathematics workshops offered are designed to meet students where they are in terms of arithmetic and algebraic skills. Students will be palced in the appropriate class based on the Gonzaga Mathematics Placement Exam taken on June 3, 2017.  Every course is tailored to provide an on-going general review and individualized help where necessary. The following courses are available in the Freshman Transition Program:

  • Advanced Math
  • Algebra
  • Geometry

Early mail-in registration is encouraged.

Students may enroll for up to three classes.
