GONZAGA WATER POLO

Gonzaga Water Polo was born as a club sport in the fall of 2002. The first team consisted of about sixteen players. By the next year (fall 2003), the team nearly doubled in size, and was divided into "A" and "B" squads. It was granted full varsity status with the start of the 2004 season.

When Gonzaga Water Polo started, it was the only D.C.-area school to have a water polo program; the team’s games were played against Baltimore schools such as Gilman, McDonogh, Loyola Blakefield and Calvert Hall. The team also participated in weekend tournaments at the U.S. Naval Academy and in Philadelphia, where teams from the mid-Atlantic region compete. Gonzaga is still the only high school varsity program in the D.C.-area.

Since those early years the team has travelled to Connecticut, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland for tournaments, playing against some of the best teams on the East Coast.

Today, Gonzaga Water Polo averages over fifty scholar-athletes spread over three teams (Varsity, JV “A” & JV “B”) and is very competitive amongst other East Coast schools despite limited practice options.

With the start of the 2008 season Gonzaga became a charter member of the DC Metro Water Polo High School League. Gonzaga’s 2008 JV “A” team won the inaugural DC Metro Water Polo High School League JV Tournament title with a thrilling win over NAAC’s “B” team while the Varsity team lost in the championship final.

Gonzaga Water Polo alumni have gone onto to play water polo at the Naval Academy, Princeton, Virginia Tech, Miami (Ohio), Loyola (Balt.), and Clemson to name a few.

Water polo is a challenging sport that combines strong swimming skills with the strategies of games like soccer and lacrosse. It fosters tremendous teamwork and is a game that is played as a varsity or club sport in most U.S. colleges. If you are someone who has enjoyed summer swimming but are not interested in making a commitment to year-round swimming training, water polo may be just the sport for you. It will keep you in great shape for your other sports, including swimming, and it may open doors for your college career.
