Coaching Staff

Marc Mandel, Head Coachmmandel@gonzaga.org 

Marc Mandel has been the head coach at Gonzaga since the fall of 2008.  During his time with the program, his Senior 8 crews have won five Stotesbury Cup Championships and four Scholastic Rowing Association of America (S.R.A.A.) Championships.  Additionally, the Second 8 has captured three Stotesbury titles and two S.R.A.A. Championships.  Marc is a frequent presenter on junior rowing topics at coaching conferences and was recognized with two separate North American Junior Rowing Coach of the Year awards in 2014/2015.  

 

Prior to Gonzaga, Marc served as the Freshman Men's Heavyweight Coach at Georgetown University.  He also spent four years as the Head Coach at Florida Institute of Technology, where the program earned a silver medal in the Heavyweight Eight at the Dad Vail Championships.  Marc graduated from Northwestern University and earned his MBA from Georgetown.  He lives in Alexandria, VA, with his wife Jessie and children Benjamin and Eliza.

 

 

Bobby Brown, Assistant Varsity Coach

Bobby Brown '04 is in his ninth season coaching for Gonzaga.  Bobby spent his first two seasons assisting with the freshmen and varsity squads. He then coached the freshman eight from 2010 - 2014.  His freshmen crews won four straight WMIRA Freshmen Championships (2011 - 2014) and a bronze medal at the 2012 Stotesbury Cup Regatta.  In 2016, his Junior 8 crew earned a sliver medal at the Stotesbury Cup. 

A 2008 Boston College graduate, he coxed the Collegiate Four+ to a bronze medal at the Head of the Charles Regatta and won the New England Fours Championship.  While at Gonzaga, Bobby coxed the varsity 8 to their first appearance in the Stotesbury Cup Grand Final, a 6th place finish in 2003. He was named to the Washington Post All-Met First-Team his senior year and garnered an invitation to try out for the United States Junior National Team (2004). 

 

Andy Bacas, Assistant Varsity Coach

Andy is in his first year coaching at Gonzaga and has responsibility for the lower varsity boats developing the next generation of varsity Eagles.  Previously he coached the Freshmen at St. Albans in 2015 and 2016.  Prior to that he was the head boys coach and program director at Yorktown High School from 2006-2012.  Since 2007 Andy’s crews have picked up 16 VASRA medals, 6 VASRA Championships and made it to the SRAA finals twice.  He was Washington Post All-Met Boys Coach of the Year in 2009.  He began his rowing career at Washington-Lee HS and rowed four years as a Yale Lightweight.  His first coaching assignment was the Yale 150 Frosh for the 1980-81 season. He and his wife Nina live in Arlington and have four children, the youngest is a Gonzaga Freshman.

 

 

Tom Daley, Head Freshman Coach

Coach Tom Daley began rowing at Father Judge High School in Philadelphia, and continued on at Temple University.  He has competed for several clubs at the Masters level including Crescent Boat Club, Occoquan Boat Club and Alexandria Community Rowing.  This is Tom's third year coaching for Gonzaga and his first as Head Freshman Coach.  He has previously coached at Bishop Ireton High School, as well as Northeast Catholic High in Philadelphia.

Rob Kuhlman, Assistant Freshman Coach

Rob Kuhlman is in his first year coaching at Gonzaga. Rob is a former Purdue University rower and is from Fishers, Indiana. He began coaching at Bishop Ireton under Gonzaga alumnus Eric Gehrke. In 2013 Rob moved to Nashville, Tennessee to help found Nashville Rowing with Eric.   Rob attended the University of Edinburgh as a graduate student in 2015 and coached novice boys.

 

Quinn McGee ’12, Assistant Freshman Coach

Quinn McGee ‘12 is a former Gonzaga rower and current Alumni Service Corps member at Gonzaga. This is Quinn’s first year coaching for Gonzaga. In May 2016 he graduated from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. While rowing at Gonzaga, Quinn earned a bronze medal in 2009 in the Freshman 8 and a silver medal in the 2V in 2012 at the Stotesbury Cup. Also in 2012 he helped the same 2V take home the gold at the SRAA National Championship in Cherry Hills, NJ. Quinn is happy to be back around Gonzaga everyday and especially around rowing every day.

Andrew Oestreich, Assistant Freshman Coach

Andrew Oestreich rowed at Boston College from 2007-2011. He has also sculled competitively as a member of the Pocock Rowing Center in Seattle, Washington. This is his third season coaching at Gonzaga.
