Welcome to the Modern Language Department

The primary objective of the Modern Language Department is to develop students' ability to understand and communicate in another language. Each of the language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) is emphasized, and classes in the Department are taught in the target language. Cultural awareness and sensitivity are developed by drawing attention to the history, arts, politics, literature, customs, and traditions of other peoples. Gonzaga students are required to fulfill a foreign language requirement: they must complete the third level of one language at Gonzaga and must have a total of three years of foreign language study at Gonzaga in no more than two languages.
